Sweating despite the cold

There are quite a few people who start sweating quickly even at subzero temperatures. You would actually be happy that the summer temperatures ease off a bit and you no longer have to pay as much attention to the issue of "your own sweat" as you did at a summery 25 degrees Celsius, yet the sweating continues unabated. A vicious circle that is sometimes difficult to break. Sweating is influenced by various factors. Thermoregulation through sweating kicks in whenever the body needs cooling to protect itself from overheating.
The so-called evaporative heat generated by sweating provides the body with the necessary body temperature, and the cooling effect begins. With a few simple tricks, you can still significantly reduce sweating in winter.

What to do if you sweat excessively despite the cold season

As soon as you step outside through the front door or apartment door, it can be icy cold. Nevertheless, it is quite possible that the body starts sweating very quickly despite the low temperatures. Those affected sweat heavily and independently of natural causes such as warmth, stress, or physical exertion. Sweating in winter or in the cold is basically nothing unusual and in very few cases is caused by illness. Often it is simply due to unsuitable clothing that we prefer to wear in winter. Ideally, it should be warm and wind- and waterproof. The problem with choosing clothing in the colder season, however, is that it can also cause heat buildup. The body is then only poorly able to evaporate heat as usual. With non-breathable winter clothing, the body feels overheated even in supposedly protected areas despite the cold outside temperatures, so cooling through sweating is stimulated.

What you can do in winter to counteract sweating is outlined below:

Basically, you should pay attention to,

  • removing your winter clothing as quickly as possible when you come back inside from the cold so that the body can adjust to the temperature difference as quickly as possible. Therefore, you should ensure adequate ventilation quickly.

  • Furthermore, it is advisable to make sure that clothing for the cold season is made of textiles that are also breathable if possible. The skin can then breathe optimally and moisture is quickly transported away from the skin, allowing optimal regulation of body temperature.

  • For particularly low temperatures, garments made of wool are suitable, for example.

  • Alcohol and nicotine are not only harmful to health, they also stimulate the body and thus contribute to sweating more quickly. Therefore, consumption should be kept to a minimum.

  • A healthy diet can also help counteract or even prevent unpleasant sweating episodes. This applies not only to the summer months. Those who generally sweat quickly should avoid spicy and/or heavily seasoned food as much as possible. Light fare such as fruits and vegetables is recommended instead.

  • Another proven remedy against excessive sweating for many people, combined with a healthy diet, is losing weight. Overweight almost always demands significantly higher energy reserves from the body than is the case, for example, with people of "normal weight." So if you have too much weight, you should try to bring it back to a normal range. Then the annoying sweat attacks will also decrease.

  • It is also very important to drink enough fluids – ideally at least 2 liters per day. You do not sweat more or faster because you drink more; the opposite is actually true. Of course, when choosing drinks, you should make sure not to consume only sugary water. Mineral water and fruit juices without sugar are ideal.

  • An antiperspirant like Odaban Spray also works very well and very quickly. Usually, sweat flow is effectively regulated after one to three applications and it is not without reason that many dermatologists worldwide recommend it as a remedy against excessive sweating.

  • Sauna visits also help your body get used to higher temperatures and thus better control the activity of the sweat glands. The sudden temperature fluctuations strongly stimulate and challenge the body's heat regulation. At the same time, regular sauna sessions make a very important contribution to strengthening the immune system and have a positive effect on other illnesses or everyday complaints.
